We make some of the greatest products in the world right here in Renton. We are Jet City USA after all, with Boeing’s commercial headquarters, which reports a record order backlog of the best selling airliner of all time, Renton’s 737.
But we also build the finest trucks in the world right here in our city. Kenworth has long been the truck of choice for commercial freight haulers, and they continue to be industry leaders in innovation. Lately, Kenworth has been patenting systems for allowing their sleeper cabs to remain powered, conditioned, and extremely comfortable, even with the truck’s engine off (a variation on hybrid technology). This reduces truck idling, saves fuel, and reduces greenhouse emissions.
And their sleeper interiors have never been more beautiful or comfortable. Take a look!

My boss’ partner is a big muckity muck with Paccar (the parent company of K-Whopper). They are now embarking on building their own engines. It makes me proud than an American owned company with factories in this country can still supply jobs, a superior product AND make a profit…another little outfit comes to mind, a place founded by a feller named William that makes metal birds.
the plant tour
If you get a chance to take a tour of the Renton K-W factory, it is very cool.
It is impressive to see the parts delievered at one end of the building and driving out as complete trucks driving out the other end of the building.
Are Boeing and Paccar good for Renton?
Randy,
Do they provide a lot of tax revenue to the city that’s above their demands?
I know they provide a lot of jobs, but from my limited understanding – few of those workers are Renton citizens…
They seem fine – I hardly hear a peep out of both factories and I live very close.
Re: Are Boeing and Paccar good for Renton?
I’d heard once that in the Puget Sound region, each Boeing job creates 2.5 jobs in the area. That’s 2.5 jobs in other industries or professions, like grocery, insurance, cell phone sales, McDonald’s, fire fighters, etc.
I would imagine the same could be true for Paccar/KW.
Re: Are Boeing and Paccar good for Renton?
Yeah, the Seattle Times just did a series on the supposed job creation that resulted from the massive corporate welfare larded upon Boeing. The upshot is that it didn’t create nearly as many jobs as promised, and most of the jobs were low paying (barely above minimum wage).
This, of course, will never stop Washington state politicians from engaging in a race to the bottom to see who can give away more–us or Alabama. It’s dubious at best that we “won” assembly jobs for a jet that is actually built just about everywhere else. Particularly when it seems as though the “just in time, world sourced” model isn’t working all that well for the Dreamliner…
The best thing…
You know the best thing about a Kenworth truck?
Killer paint job!
The best thing is that Gary Ridgeway doesn’t work there anymore.
