News from former Councilmember Randy Corman, your Renton City Hall insider. (All views expressed in journal entries are Randy Corman's personal views, and not the official position of the City of Renton or other city employees. Views expressed in reader comments are those of the commenter)
from Inez Petersen: Comments on the subject of the day
I am elated to hear confirmation that Council members Denis Law, Don Persson, and Marci Palmer stand with Council President Randy Corman. This is great news, because we have not known where they stood by virtue of any comments made “on the record.” I believe that Councilmember Toni Nelson stands with them too, based on personal comments she made to me about eminent domain. She has great compassion for the people in the Highlands.
To “seal the deal,” I’d like to see these council members prepare and read a Memorandum under “Unfinished Business” [as the mayor did on June 26th] officially explaining their position and setting a new direction for bottom-up planning, to be assisted by a hired consultant to chair the joint planning committee, comprised of members of the HCA, other tenants and property owners in the Study Area, Council, and staff from EDNSP.
So much time has been wasted on the Moratorium; and planning “in secret” without citizen involvement has resulted in nothing productive. Even this apartment idea was done without coordination between the mayor and her Boss–the People.
I would like to see Trust restored, and a public statement from the majority of the Council could begin that process.
I’m with Randy: Single family homes and duplexes need to be allowed uses. The four public hearings made that very plain.
Use the market to Renton’s advantage
I am a property owner in the Highlands. I agree with thei direction indicated by Mr. Corman as the one that is held by the majority of the Council members.
Owners interested in redeveloping should have the opportunity to develop projects that make sense as dictated by the market and each lot’s geography.
Owners who want to stay on in their duplex on it’s large open lot, should be permitted to do that as well without their property values being damaged by being marked non-conforming. (Perhaps the next owner will take advantage of the opportunity to redevelop.)
Some proposals will encourage a postive direction, and some will simply prevent improvements.
The best opportunity for success will come from working with, not counter to, market forces and cycles. (This applies to commercial as well as residential, BTW.)
