For some reason at the forum last night my opponent falsely accused me, as a senior council member and Council President, of not responding to Asian and BIPOC hate speech during the pandemic. The truth is I treated it extremely seriously and took many meaningful actions. We passed a city proclamation condemning it in May of 2020, and passed a resolution in August of 2020. The Mayor and I made another firm public statement in February 2021. In May 2021 we joined the”Hate Has No Home Here” national campaign. That spring we specifically emphasised we were were a “hate-free” city in an update to our business plan at the Council Retreat that I chaired. We also updated our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Tactical Plan that year, and chartered a new Equity Commission to supplement the work of our Inclusion Task force during my last two months on council, while I was Council President. We also took many other steps to counter hate speech.
It is counterproductive to all these efforts for my opponent to falsely communicate to our residents that city leadership has not condemned hate. It’s also simply dishonest. The documents can be found all over the Renton City Website. Here are some excerpts.
Kim is so devious, she started to actually believe her own lies. That interaction was shameful for her.
I feel she was just showing her true self with that attack question.
It should come back on her at the election. It shows the best she can do is a poor personal attack on her opponent.
She’s hung around her buddy Carmen too long. Time to clean up our city council!! First Kim then Carmen. We need people love our city and care for the well-being of ALL citizens, not just their special interests.
Besides, if anyone is racist in Renton, it’s Carmen Rivera. I’ve read her Twitter posts, you can hear her hatred and disdain dripping from her voice towards anyone not like her. If you aren’t BIPOC or LGBT (in other wards, WHITE, especially our Boeing workers and police)then she spews vile hatred. She even called herself a Unicorn on the city council because she’s a female Latino and gay. Such a stupid thing to say when you are supposed to be a professional when representing our city government.
I’ve also read her articles in the Renton reporter. Where she continues to publicly put a negative spin about our city.
And lets not forget her classless toddler post nationwide where she chose to focus on the sexuality of the suspect rather than show any empathy towards the people harmed.
RACISM GOES BOTH WAYS!!
Carmen’s time is coming and she’s scared to loose her friends on city council. I’m sure she’s feeding lines to Kim to try to smear your name.
It’s gotten old and it’s gross when anyone running does it with a smear campaign. Nobody wants to see or hear it anymore from any form of government, let alone in our small city.
Every single post I’ve read, even before you decided to run again, is proof that you care about the law abiding, tax paying, non-criminal citizens in Renton.
You want crime to drop, people to be safe again, criminals caught and the businesses and people of Renton be prosperous.
Thank you for writing this!! I feel the exact same way about Carmen. She does not have Renton’s best interests at heart. She is actually one of the biggest Renton haters. She is super hypocritical on her social media platforms. You’re right she is completely intolerant of anyone who isn’t BIPOC or LGBTQIA+, she’s actually hateful. Carmen wants to desperately become tik tok famous. That’s her main motivation, not Renton. That’s all she does is say Randy is spreading misinformation but yet she goes on socials and does the very thing she accuses others of. Randy has given nothing but facts and I greatly appreciate him for that. You definitely have my vote. I am so sad to see the state Renton is in right now. It’s time to bring common sense back.
I discussed lying in an earlier blog entry on May 4 (before I had decided to run.) https://www.randycorman.com/?p=14955
Lawyers are held to a higher standard. It is completely unethical to lie to the public in order to get reelected. Especially in the city she practices immigration law.
Kim Khanh Van sent an email calling Ruth Perez and Ed Prince “the token minorities” on the Council. Let’s talk about being racist!
Could you cut and paste that portion of the email? That would be good to see….
