Written by King County Councilman Reagan Dunn has sent this letter to the Choose Renton Fairwood-annexation campaign, agreeing to sponsor the legislation which would put annexation to a vote of the affectted residents. (This vote would only occur if a vote to incorporate into a seperate city of Fairwood does not get a majority.) So, the stage is set for Fairwood to make a choice on their future.

Huge 2009 City of Renton Property Tax increases
A word of warning to Fairwood homeowners who are thinking about becoming part of Renton. Recently Renton home owners received their 2009 tax statements and were shocked to see huge percentage increases in their property taxes. The increases averaged 34% from Renton Schools District and an unprecedented 24% from the City of Renton. Between these two taxing districts in Renton, they averaged an unprecedented percentage increase of 29%.
This percentage increase is totally unacceptable and action should be taken to remove from office those elected officials who made these double digit property tax increases possible. We are talking about the Renton School Board members and the Renton City Council.
Below is a sampling from the King County Assessor’s office from one Renton Senior’s home 2009 tax statement. This senior and his wife have lived in Renton for more than 40 years. He is 82 year old and he and his wife (who are a fixed income) have told us that they can ill afford to keep paying Renton’s ever increasing property taxes. They said that if the City of Renton and the Renton School District continue to demand more and more tax money each year that he and his wife will be forced to sell their beloved home and move out of Renton.
Fairwood homeowners take a serious look at the example below of double digit 2009 tax increases in the City of Renton. Then ask yourself the question of “do I want to vote for annexaction into Renton and pay higher property taxes?”. The choice is yours.

In you’re scare tactics… please factor out the increases from the School District, State, County and Valley General that will happen regardless of incorporation.
As for the increase from the City of Renton vs Unincorporated King County – you get a lot for your dollar. Specifically you get Police that will actually do something when you call 911.

As a seperate issue: The Renton School District suffers greatly becouse of it’s north-west portion of it’s territory is filled with illiterate jobless criminals and their deplorable crotch fruit.
There’s no easy fix for the district, and I commend them for doing the best they can given the horrible material they have to work with.

You may want to review your friend’s tax statement again. The numbers you provide appear to be the percentage of money that goes to each taxing district (based on looking at my tax statement).
The only accurate way to compare is to look at the yearly levy rates (since property values change and so does the share that each property pays). Based on the levy rate tables on the King County Assessor’s website, the only rate that increased in the 2100 levy area was the Renton School District and that increase we voted on and approved. The levy rate for the City of Renton actually went down .25 or 25 dollars per $100,000.

What you are quoting is the percentage break down for where your tax dollars are going, not how much they increased.

The “fixed income senior” you speak of should research a senior/disabled tax exemption.
