Cathy tells me she was sitting on our couch when she heard our neighbors freshly-emptied recycling bin taking itself for a drive down the street in front of our house today. The wind propelled the wheeled bin onto the hill on Harrington Place, through the intersection with NE 23rd, down the next block, and across NE 23rd Place before it came to rest against another curb.
Cathy retrieved the bin and brought it back to our neighbors house.
It’s probably a good idea to take an indelible pen and write your address on these new bins. Also, we’ll have to remind waste management to leave them parked in secure locations after they’ve been emptied.
Photos of some wind-powered vehicles…
Good Luck with that
Waste Management simply drives by, lifts up the totes with the mechanical arm, shakes it a few times into the bin, then slams it back down onto the pavement. They don’t care if it falls over, turns sideways, rolls down the hill or has lots of valpak mailer pieces fluttering about. They won’t get out of the truck to deal with it and won’t care about putting the can back in a “secure” spot.
Also, they need to be spaced two feet apart to fit the arms around them. They wrote in Silver Indelible marker on my Mom’s can with arrows
< -----------must be spaced 2 feet apart-------------->
Anyway, I don’t know why they just don’t write the house numbers on the cans when they deliver them. Probably because they may be used by others later, BUT, they tell you to mark them if you want to…whatever.
Re: Good Luck with that
Try and get 3 bins each at least 2 feet apart and over 3 feet from any cars, all within about 5 feet. Good luck with that one, I know I have never done it.

Ya’ gotta go vertical !
Re: Good Luck with that
Never tried that maybe I should (not).
Good thinking out of the box.

RE: Recycling Bins
My blue one wanted to roll down the sidewalk.
mrs sado and I spent most of the day picking the bins
up when the wind blue them down.
Why is it the wind storms always come on garbage day.

Closely Related to Tornado Phenomena
According to NOAA, there is a closely tied relationship with Variable Speed Aeronautical Current Phenomena and Garbage Day. This relationship is inversely proportional to the metal content of garbage cans, thus the more metal cans are utilized, the less Aeronautical Current Flow. Since we have moved to the LARGE plastic bins, this actually increases incidence of Wind Force and Shear, resulting in Multiple Bin Manipulation by Air Current Events.
This is a very similar Phenomena to the Tornado-Mobile Home Park relationship.
It has become of great concern around the world and has been well documented by NOAA, the CDC, the WHO, and the Rolling Stones. Additionally, the Government Ministry of Environment in the Glorious Nation of Whateveryoucallitakistan has listed this a a priority for their next 5 year plan under the Military Junta.
Take care
Re: Closely Related to Tornado Phenomena
I see. Yes, the Tornado attraction to mobile-home parks is widely documented. I can see how this effect could increase wind on trash days 🙂
