Julie Andrews (yes, like Mary Poppins) cares for a flock of five hens in Renton Highlands. They are each paying her back right now with an egg a day. With the days getting longer, most of Renton’s backyard flocks have completed their annual molt and have started laying at full speed.
It’s been a somewhat challenging couple years for local chicken raisers who have been advised to keep chickens mostly undercover to protect against bird flu (which is spread by bird droppings). Bird flu has also contributed to the high price of eggs at the store.
Renton has a strong, committed network of backyard farmers, and I’ve covered their activities more deeply in this post here.
Can confirm. My girls are producing about an egg every two days. I feel like I’m rich. RICH I tell you!
