In further evidence about stress at the newspaper offices, a Seattle PI blog columnist has lashed out at a rival in today’s online edition. Before the day was out however, it was taken off-line. I suspect the pressure of another round of lay-offs is at the root of this tiff.
While the Newspaper blog was taken down, this blogger sponsored by the Puget Sound Business Journal wrote an article on this exchange and includes a link to the Google cache of the subject article (the one that was removed).
I wonder if weekly news papers, both local free ones (i.e., The Stranger and Seattle Weekly) are national ones (Newsweek, etc) are also hurting. It seems like they rely less on classifieds, and more on regular ads.
It’s a pity – the local daily paper is/was the best way to unify a city. I hope something will arise to take the place of them – the net/blogs/etc are nice, but not local.
I wouldn’t exactly call either the Seattle Times or PI a local paper here in Renton and other outlying areas. I will grant that it is closer to local then the New York Times.

Exactly. Perhaps some day we’ll have a local paper with more heft than RR, but I think we’ll need to first rethink what it means to have a local paper. Less national news, more pure local news. I love the local section of the PI – it is the only place that keeps me up-to-date with what is going on around the city.
