And there was a shooting at 2 a.m. in Skyway.
Landing security
What private security does the ownership of the Landing provide? Once, probably when they first opened, I saw a guy on a Segway patroling Target’s lot, but that was quite some time ago. Now that the theatre is in operation, as well as the garage paid for by the city, I assume that creates more of a critical mass for potential property and other crimes.
Also, on a different topic, where is the large tower, the focal point, “Bob” from Harvest Partners promised the public to be an artistic element at multiple public meetings? Would make a good place to mount surveillance cameras.
Rainier Avenue &
With the plans to increase bus traffic on Rainier Avenue, what are the plans for increased police presence to keep the gang violence from S. Seattle’s Rainier Avenue from moving in and out of Renton? It’s the gang activity from this area that was involved in the Southcenter shooting. What kind of efforts are being made by the County and Renton Police to reduce the criminal activities in Skyway?
Re: Rainier Avenue &
Renton Police are making a strong effort to control gang activity, including maintaining a dedicated gang officer who tracks graffiti and gang activity in Renton, and contributes to a national database that monitors this type of activity. The gang specialist keeps other Renton officers aware of gang developments, movements, members, and other details, to help minimize the gang threat in Renton.
Recently, there has been a growing gang presence in the Seattle area, although it remains very small in caparison to regions like LA, Phoenix, Las Vagas, and the Bay Area. Still, it is a growing problem, and local police departments are taking it very seriously. The worst locations are the unincorporated county, where the police (sheriff) presence is only 25% what we have in Renton, so gang members can move about with less oversight. Skyway is currently one of these areas, although the residents are studying the possibility of annexing to Seattle, Tukwila, or Renton. None of these cities is anxious to incur the costs of updating the infrastructure in this area, but perhaps the best reason for nearby cities to take it on would be to flush out crime pockets.
Meanwhile, the council, mayor, and police chief will work diligently to make gangs feel unwelcome in Renton.
Re: Rainier Avenue &
At this time we need more action and less studying. Thugs at the main bus terminal downtown, and up and down Rainier and Skyway need serious long term jail time. And the message needs to be communicated loud and clear at all our middle and high schools. With slack rental regulations, Renton has attracted too many problematic people.
Stabbing at Southcenter
Did you see this news about the stabbing at Southcenter on Sunday? What is happening down there?? Makes me want to go to Bellevue Square or elsewhere.
