Former Renton Council Member Marcie Palmer recently pointed out to me that our community was in need of a comprehensive community calendar. In recent years technology has somehow made it more difficult to track down start times and locations of events in our community, since printed schedules and posters have largely disappeared. Many online invite systems like “Facebook Events” use algorithms that randomly hide events right when you look for them.
The local newspapers calendars will often not be available to non-subscribers. The city maintains an online calendar but primarily only for city meetings and events that have major government involvement, so independent groups in Renton can’t really use it. Organizations can post events on their own websites, but potential attendees have to know to check all those websites to discover an event is coming up. In summary, residents need a place they can find local entertainment, involvement, and education opportunities all in one spot.
At Marcie’s suggestion, I’ve added this valuable feature to this website. Better still, Marcie has offered to help me maintain it. Since Marcie has long been the go-to resource to find out when something is happening in our Renton community, who better to keep the community’s calendar?
How to use the calendar to find events
You will find the link prominently on the upper right hand side of this website. Click it, and you will be in a Google calendar populated by community events. On the upper left of the calendar you can scroll from month to month. You can open events by clicking on them, and get information about locations and start times. Some of the events will even include links, where you can get further information.
How to easily advertise your event– for free!
If you have a Renton event coming up that you would like the community to know about, Marcie and I would be happy to add it to the calendar as a service to you and the community. Simply email both Marcie and me at the email addresses below, and send us the information about your event. And if you like, I can add a blog entry about it if you can include a photo or graphic along with a paragraph or two describing your organization and the event. I’ll link the blog entry to the calendar so people can pull it up easily later. Google will also index it so it can be more easily found by people googling the name of the event.
If you are a business, we’ll be happy to include events that involve a special experience, such as crafting, meeting an author, hearing a speaker, getting a tour, or getting a free snack.
Please send your email to both of these addresses to get the fastest service:

Great idea! Renton has needed this for a long time. Thank you.
Thanks! Marcie really deserves credit for the idea. My role was saying “Yes, we’ve needed that!” and then getting the tech work done. She has done a great job populating the calendar, and we’re both ready to keep it up. Please send in your events, and tell your friends.
I should add that Marcie not only served on city council for 12 years, but she also worked for the Chamber of Commerce for many years. So if anyone knows everything that’s happening around town, it’s her.
