Cool!
I really like Joe’s — it’s far less expensive than REI, has a nicer selection than Big 5, and is less generic than SportsAuthority. It’ll be great to have a place in town with a nice selection of athletic shoes and outdoor apparel. The Big 5 downtown needs a serious makeover, so maybe the new competition will spur them to action.
Speaking of The Landing, there were some people near the Panda Express this morning with a banner saying something like “Labor Dispute – The Landing Renton hurts our community!” Perhaps it’s related to the construction of the apartment buildings? Let me guess: the Local Stonemasons #433 is asking for a 30 hour week, free medical insurance for extended family members, and automatic retirement with full pensions at age 50? Just kidding — perhaps the union’s dispute has merit, whatever it is. But that banner was really annoying.
Oh wait, maybe the Westfield people are at it again and have hired fake protesters to scare away business from The Landing!
Re: Cool!
Joe’s has certainly has broadened it’s selection. REI better watch out – you could outfit yourself very nicely for any backpacking trip at Joe’s. They have great water purifiers, backpacks, boots, tents, sleeping bags – no junk in their selection.
It looks like they will be renting cross country skis as well – they’re a good selection for everybody: Serious hikers, redneck hunters and all of us in between.
….
Randy, could you urge the police to make sure that the fake protesters have what ever Renton needs from protesters: Permits etc. You can tell from a mile off they they’re just there to make trouble for Renton. Have the police make sure that they keep moving – no loitering etc….
….
On the Landing front: Rumor has is that Pannera won’t lease. Fooey!
Re: Cool!
Ben, do you know what the people were “protesting”? I only saw part of the banner. Anyway, if they think they’re going to gain the support of Renton residents with such banners, they’re seriously mistaken. If they represent a union with a specific grievance, they need to focus on that issue.
Re: Cool!
They just had a giant and professionally made sign that said “Labor Dispute – The Landing hurts our Renton community”, or something very close to that.
They didn’t have Union affiliation signs, or anything more specific. No picket signs, no fliers, nothing.
I rolled down the window to talk to them – the closest one wasn’t interested in educating me as she diden’t talk to me at all.
It’s complete BS whatever it it….
Re: Cool!
That banner usually appears when SEIU is protesting a building or development that is hiring or contracting with non-union labor for janitorial/maintenance duties. They had the same banner in DT Bellevue right in front of Seastar Restaurant to protest the Civica Office Commons building management. Only they added cowbells, loud drums and yelled a lot. It was really annoying and I pointed out to them that any support I would have given them evaporated instantly into permanently disliking their methods and SEIU in general. They had previously protested two other buildings in DT Bellevue, the same way. They are a militant, abusive group who tries to bully their way without regard for anyone else.
Re: Cool!
yeah panera pulled out, i recently exchanged e-mails with the leasing directore from the leasing studio and she said panera had pulled out of the lease and will no longer be at the landing. But, she did say they are ligning up a very impressive list of resteraunts and stores. Though, i just noticed jamba juice has been taken off everything (website, brochures and everything) guessing jamba wont be leasing either. 🙁
whens everything else opening? 🙁 no announcments, nothing…for months.
With the economy slowing down, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a lengthy lull in the action (at least with regard to the smaller leased spaces). It took Kent Station quite a while to get fully occupied, and that was under good economic conditions. I’d rather see businesses wait a while to open than see them quickly go under, which would create a bad precedent and negative image for the entire development.
Also, I’d imagine that the smaller businesses are counting on traffic from the new apartment buildings once they open. Speaking of that, I’m really liking the new brick facing they’re applying to one of those buildings… it looks very smart. I’m curious to see how well it’ll blend in with the metal siding.
yeah i agree, the brick looks great. I really want a great variety of stores and resteraunts. Im not too thrilled about THE ROCK wood fire pizza. I would have rather seen a more classy, upscale joint. whenever i see that place its in some mall like the landing which isnt doing so hot…. 🙁
Could be worse: at least it’s not an Applebees or a Hooters!
I hope Pallino Pasteria doesn’t pull out. It’s more of an upscale establishment but it’s still affordable for most people (albeit overpriced for a bowl of pasta with sauce).
Give “The Rock” a chance. On the “Corporate-Chain-o-Meter”, with Jet City being a 1 and McDonalds being a 10 – “The Rock” is a solid 4.
i see the landing updated their website. Still not impressed withany new announcments. COME ON….GET THIS CRAP TOGEATHER. AT&T, BECU, UPS store, Massage envy, Element salon and spa(like we dont have enough around here), the rock is the central restraunt (not that classy) and papaya (whats that?)….im VERY displeased with how this development is shaping up. I was looking at where these were all located in each building…and the so-called “10th street” which is supposed to be a “fasionable strole” has nothing but restraunts and the salon and spa. Please, the landing is a bust. Maybe next time renton.
hey is the rock concidered to be the “brewing pub” at the landing?
