A few days ago I posted a blog entry about our two 11th district legislators helping bury the House bill that would allow police to crack down on car thieves. Then 12 hours later six teens stole and recklessly crashed a car into another car after running a red light at the corner of Airport and Rainier, sending three of the teens to Harborview in critical condition.
Today KOMO news informs us that the teens stole the car from a resettled Ukrainian family that had already endured a difficult year, and desperately needed their car. Furthermore, they had not been able to secure insurance for it, since the wave of spiraling car thefts has made Kias nearly uninsurable for new owners. Without reasonable law enforcement, the pain just goes on and on.
You Republicans and your sob stories. The car will be covered by insurance.
This car was not insured because the new owners discovered they could not get insurance in Washington State for a Kia due to the out-of-control theft rate of these cars. Fortunately, thanks to the viral reach of this news story, our caring community generously came through for this family buying them a replacement though a GoFundMe. Unfortunately, there are about three cars per day stolen in Renton, and they are not all going to be viral in the media, even though some of them also result in misery for the owners. Others are damaged in attempted thefts, and they too can get totaled even if they are never taken. Like this story here. https://www.randycorman.com/?p=11377
